Online Tile Calculator

The Tile Store gives you an easy step by step guide to calculating online what you require to carry out your tiling.

Follow the example below for a typical bathroom and then just apply the same principles to your own room. In this bathroom we are tiling the shower cubicle walls floor to ceiling, tiling all other walls to half height and tiling the floor, which has timber floor boards. We have selected the Fish bathroom wall tile range with a border at half height and random insets. The floor is to be Ardesia.

Guide - How to measure your room

Imperial to Metric Convertor

1) Calculate perimeter of room:
0.90 + 0.30 + 1.60 + 1.70 + 2.50 + 1.40 = 8.40m

2) Calculate area of walls to be tiled:
Complete room at half height: 8.4x1.2m = 10.08m2
Additional area to shower at full height: 0.80 + 0.80x1.2m = 1.92m2
Total = 12.00m2

Omit areas not being tiled:
Door 0.90x1.2m = 1.08m2
Window 1.2x1m = 1.20m2
Behind bath 2.4x0.70m = 1.68m2
Total = 3.96m2
Nett area of tiling is 12.00m2 - 3.96m2 = 8.04m2

3) Calculate number of border tiles required:
Perimeter of room as 1) above 8.40m
Omit: Door - 0.90m, Window - 1.20m = 2.10m
Nett length is 8.40m - 2.10m = 6.30m/each border 0.25m long
Total 26 required

4) Decide how many insets you want:
This may vary dependant on your own personal requirements but a rough rule of thumb is 1 per 1.50m2 of tiling so for this example 8.04m2/1.5 = Total 6 number required.

5) Calculate area of floor to be tiled:
Unless the room is an even shape the easiest way is to divide it up into smaller areas so for this bathroom we have 2 areas:
a) (1.40-0.80) = 0.60 x 0.90m = 0.54m2
b) 1.70 x 1.60m = 2.72m2
Nett area of tiling = 3.26m2

6) Waste/spares:
To allow for smaller areas like around the window, cutting waste, breakages and some spares a general addition of 10% is normally adequate. When ordering it is also normal to usually round quantities up to the nearest 0.50m2 for the main wall and floor tiles.
Based upon this example the list of tiles and other items required would be:
Tiles:
Wall tiles as 2) 8.04m2 + 10% waste - total required say 9m2 of Brio @ 20/m2 = 180 tiles.

Borders as 3) 26 + 10% waste - total required 29 Blue Fish borders.

Insets as 4) 6 Blue Fish insets.

Floor tiles as 5) 3.26m2 + 10% waste total say 4m2 Ardesia Blue @ 9/m2 = 36 tiles.

Adhesive and grout: (see section '07 adhesives & grouts' for approximate coverage of each product)

Wall tile adhesive for dry areas - Mapegrip D1 1 tub
Wall tile adhesive for wet areas - Mapegrip D2 1 tub
